Chapter 12

“Oh, Sid, you look so tired! I made some turkey chili for dinner. Do you want some?” Zandie’s voice meets me at the door. She’s babying me, too. I’m guessing I look even worse after my cat nap in the back of Aziah’s car.

Sighing, I look down at the fabric balled up in my arms. Aziah had pulled something out of the trunk and handed it to me before speeding away. I’m pretty sure this is an end-of-summer clearance dress she wants me to shorten. Aziah is ridiculously tall and has gorgeous legs. She loves to buy ankle-length maxi dresses, so I can ‘do my magic’ and make her look super-hot on the cheap.

“That’s pretty,” Zandie says, patiently following my gaze. “Red isn’t your usual color.”

“Mmm,” I reply weakly. I’m in a post-nap haze and don’t have the patience to explain the dress isn’t for me. Zandie lifts my backpack off of my shoulders and extends it out to me.

“Thanks,” I mumble, accepting the backpack and stuffing the dress inside.

“Oh good, you’re home. Phone for you, Sid!” Carl calls from the kitchen.

I head for the kitchen, dragging my feet.

Carl pats me on the shoulder as he hands me the phone. He looms over his chili, dipping a pinky in the brown sludgy liquid and placing it delicately on his tongue. “Mmmmmmm.”

“Hello?” I speak carefully, wary of the curveball I feel coming my way. Relatives and bill collectors use the landline, that’s it. Neither option is great at the moment.

“What is that man still doing in my daughter’s house?” the voice on the other end of the phone screams.

“Hello, Grandmother,” I reply, giving Carl my best run-for-the-hills look. The calm drains from his face and is replaced by a look of terror. He picks up the pot of chili and runs from the room, not bothering to look back. Zandie lets out an anxious squeak. They’re out of sight, but I can still hear their hurried whispers. I’m surprised Carl didn’t know who he was talking to. I guess he thinks more people call me Aurora. Well, more people do now. . . .

“Are they still engaged? Am I going to have a plumber for a son-in-law?” Grandmother asks, still screaming.

“Yeah, I think so,” I reply, deadpan.

“’Yeah’? ‘Yeah’? Yes, is the polite way to answer a question. And who, may I ask, is Dorian? I hear you are receiving chocolates from this boy? Is he from a good family? What is his occupation? What is his earning potential?”

I should have seen this coming. If I wasn’t so sleep deprived and ghost-focused I would have been prepared. Of course, Mrs. Thesan watched Elsie give me the package. The whole line of events plays out in my head . . . Mrs. Thesan asked who the package was from and Elsie answered honestly—then the bored house-bound widow made a phone call. Grandmother’s voice shouts somewhere behind my thoughts, her voice growing louder and higher pitched.

“He’s a boy that has a crush on me,” I interrupt in a monotone voice.
